Since we released the ShredLights app in 2022 thousands of riders have upgraded their night rides to be more convenient than ever by syncing lights together and customizing light settings to be just right for their rides.
But we knew that after the launch more ideas and improvements would come based on rider feedback, so we made sure that you could easily update your lights at home if we released new firmware, which we are doing today.
Now, we'd like to introduce the new 2.0 firmware for ShredLights+ which has 3 major updates including longer standby battery life, updates to the auto on/off feature, and advanced brake mode settings for the SL-R1+ brake lights.
Get All 3 Updates Explained in 3 Minutes
Update #1: Improved Standby Battery Life
First and most importantly, we improved the standby battery life by up to 200% so your lights last longer in between rides. The 2.0 firmware gives you a new setting called “bluetooth motion wake” to manage how bluetooth is turned on after your lights go into sleep mode.
What is Sleep Mode?
After 20 minutes without motion, your lights will automatically enter sleep mode and shut off bluetooth to conserve battery life. We set that timer to 20 minutes so you still have a window to control your lights from the app before bluetooth disconnects.
The 2.0 Firmware defaults to have bluetooth motion wake disabled, meaning that bluetooth will remain off until you turn the light on from the button, AKA “bluetooth button wake”. This improves your standby battery life by 200%, but it comes with a small trade off. After more than 20 minutes, you cannot use group turn on or control lights from the app until each light is turned on from the button and bluetooth is turned back on.
If you bought the new ShredLights to never turn on multiple lights again, then just enable bluetooth motion wake. When you’re ready to go ride, just shake-to-wake all of your lights and turn the entire group on from a single light or the app. The best part is, we still managed to get a 100% improvement to standby battery life with bluetooth motion wake enabled.
So to recap, either way you’ll get longer standby battery life with the 2.0 firmware and now you can easily manage how bluetooth is turned on from the app.
Update #2: Auto on/off Feature Updates
Next up, we made auto on/off more convenient to use by limiting the auto on feature to trigger only after the lights have automatically turned off. That means when you turn lights off from the button or the app they will not automatically turn on again so you don’t have to keep changing this setting from the app. Speaking of the app, auto on/off is now a group setting so it’s faster to apply to an entire group of lights.
We also adjusted the timing so now your lights will automatically shut off after 30 seconds of sitting still instead of the previous time of 2 minutes. Then you can instantly turn them back on with motion making it super convenient to use and conserve battery life while you’re taking a break.
Update #3: Advanced Brake Mode Settings
Last but not least, you now have more control over brake mode works on the SL-R1+ with 4 new advanced settings.
Sensitivity = How often brake mode triggers
Duration = How long brake mode lasts while braking
Brightness = How bright brake mode is
Pattern = Which pattern is shown when brake mode is active
Our favorite new pattern is 'rapid' which we modeled after the brake light used on F1 cars. We also love combining high sensitivity with short duration, so people behind us always know when we're slowing down without shining for too long and annoying them.
How to Update Your Lights
Make sure that you have the newest version of the app downloaded first and your lights have at least 25% charge. Then pair your lights to the app and tap "Update Lights" at the top of the home screen. Then tap "install now" on the update screen to begin the update which takes about 5 minutes.
