Now For Some Context

As an avid XR rider myself, I have a lot of experience using ShredLights on the Onewheel and know that we can do better. We designed the sticky mounts to be a simple and effective way to add brighter lights and improve visibility on the Onewheel. The light output from the SL-300 and SL-1000 are a serious game changer for riding at night, not to mention the style points of the SL-FX.

However, we received some feedback from riders that lights were not staying attached as well as they'd like.

That got me thinking there must be a better way...

Meet Wil & Ernie, the Magnet Masters

I began doing more research and talking to our customers. My search led me to a rider named Wil, who expressed the same concerns with lights falling off and S-LOCK being a bit too strong to remove his ShredLights easily.

To solve these problems, Wil came up with the idea to buy some magnets from Amazon and redesign the mounts himself. This small change significantly improved his experience using ShredLights to the point where he said he loves using them for the following reasons:

  1. Lights can easily be attached or detached without even looking in less than ideal conditions
  2. Easy swapping from the board to a helmet or wrist guard depending on need
  3. Lights can be attached to anything metal and double as fantastic work lights
  4. Magnets allow for more flexibility on impact than traditional mounts

 

After meeting with Wil, I continued interviewing more Onewheel riders including a rider named Ernie, who independently came up with the same idea to use magnets! He even used the same magnets as Wil, but his design came from a different problem with the sticky mounts.

Ernie said he has now ridden over 1,200 miles with the magnetic mounts and the lights have not come off a single time while riding. Nice work Ernie!

I Need My Own!

After speaking with Wil and Ernie, I had to try these magnetic mounts myself so I purchased the same magnets and created prototypes for testing. It was super easy to make them and I had functioning magnetic mounts in about 15 minutes.

Right away, I loved how easy it was to attach and remove lights and I was also impressed with how strong the magnets are. The key here is the downward strength of the magnets is very strong. This means any force pushing the light directly away from the magnet will hold very well, but if you push on the side of the light it will come off easily.

Now, I've ridden about 20 miles with the magnetic mounts and have yet to lose a light while riding. My riding isn't on Bodhi's level, but I hit the occasional curb drop and off-roading which they handled beautifully.

I did some roll testing which did knock the lights off about 1/3 of the time, but the magnets were fine and I popped them right back on the board. I actually like that these come off, as opposed to holding on for dear life like the VHB mounts need to.

What Do You Think?

Me, Wil and Ernie are all clearly stoked about the magnetic mounts. But, for ShredLights to design the perfect magnetic sticky mounts we need input from other Onewheel riders too.

First of all, i love this idea, and want it ASAP, this seems great, the only feedback i have is, the mounting unit not attached to onewheel, can be slightly narrowed to fit the side of the onewheel frame, as the current models seem to protrude out or in too close the wheel and may cause slight wheel bite.

So the time has come where I will be moving on from the Pint X. 11 months and 1,600 miles later I have sold it as is…minus my Shredlights. My new GT arrives in a few days and the first modification will be mounting the Shredlights in the exact same manner.

1,600 miles and never lost on the beach, very minimal trail rides (possibly less than a mile even,) but many rolls and two major street crashes, the Shredlights reposition themselves right back in place. Happy to continue my night rides, but now the question is, will the battery life survive at the highest setting with a much longer range where the Pint X last right at the 18 mile mark. 😉

I think magnetic mounts would be a great idea. Especially for one wheels. Currently if you mount shredlights on your rails underneath or on the side the shredlight will be the first thing hit if the board tips over to the side. This means that any hard impact with the regular sticky mount on could snap it off or break your light. I think this is a great idea to make the lights secure easily removable and make the lights have some give if you crash your board on them. I do have one idea that may make things a bit better. With some of the magnetic fenders for the onewheel the magnetic blocks that mount to the rails have a raised edge or corner. This makes it so your fender is aligned perfectly every time. I think a concept like that would be extremely helpful for magnetic mounts. This would help keep the shredlights pointing in the right direction and may also make it easier to attach by just snapping it on and having it automatically line up perfect every time ! I would love to test out these mounts if you get to make them.

Personally, I would be afraid if the lights were to fall off during a fall, dropping curbs, curb nudging, or trail riding (roots). Yet, seeing that a magnetic fender for onewheels holds up to most of the onewheel bashing, I think magnetic attachment will work great.

Well damn. I guess Will and I had the same exact idea as I shared the exact same idea with you, and even shared the Amazon reference to easily mount the Shredlights.

Kudos to Will for thinking outside the box. I have yet to lose a Shredlights unit and one important note you didn’t mention that also made me resort to using magnetic mounts…is because when I use the mobile car mount, the Shredlights mount made my fingers raw having to remove them off from under the board in order for the OneWheel to sit in its place on the car mount. With the magnets you simply twist them to the side and you can have them off in half a second.

Also, it is best removed when twisted off to the side, and not pulled off because the adhesive will peel off much quicker that way. I have dug these in beach sand, rolled the board plenty and they have just enough play that at impact, it doesn’t actually come off. Nor does it damage the hard plastic mounts.

The only other tip I have is if you use a different valve stem cap. You have to make sure the valve stem cap doesn’t physically tap the Shredlights when mounted.

Hopefully everyone enjoys this logical idea, and keeps thinking outside the box.

Oh and to the person above who has the concern of losing light… the magnetic mount is focused on the mounting option, not on light output. I compliment my Shredlights with a hip light and it’s a perfect duo when blasting bridges and paths 12 hours of the day.

Magnetic mounts are a great idea. My only concern is the same as with the sticky mounts: will I lose a light when going over a root or a curb?

So far I have only popped one light off. I was going up a pretty steep hill and some brush took it off the mount. It suddenly became much darker so I knew it was off and easily found it.

Magnetic mounts would provide more flexibility because they can mounted anywhere metallic. You could experiment with the best locations for the type of Riding you are doing.
